For Our Family

Combining my UX design and facilitation experience with my love of tabletop games, I designed a collaborative storytelling card game about belonging and identity for children of immigrants and crowdfunded on Kickstarter.

As an independent, first-time publisher, my priority was getting the product made. However, I still prioritized paying my illustrators a fair rate, covering the costs of production and distribution, and having product availability post-campaign.

The experience

For Our Family helped facilitate a brave environment to explore their past, their “what ifs,” their culture all through a fictional lens. You learn the game by playing it. Each player takes a turn to draw a card and reads its prompt. This invites curiosity and encourages conversation between players. As each player answers their prompt, the setting, the characters, and their relationship builds in tandem.

Road to Kickstarter

I initially self-published the first PDF-only iteration on itch.io, but after positive feedback and interest from international, queer artists, I decided to commission a full physical product. I hired illustrators, guested on podcasts and live streams, and organized fulfillment. I leaned on my existing skillset as a visual designer to create the splash page and all social media collateral.
